Choosing the right moment to ask for notification permission

The best moment is not universally early or late. It is understandable in context.

A mobile application being used

Begin with the notification use case

A delivery update, fraud alert and weekly recommendation make different promises. Identify the action or outcome the notification supports, then find the first moment that promise is concrete to the user.

Test a meaningful contrast

Do not bundle new copy, timing and eligibility into one test if you need to know which change mattered. Confirm that each group was actually eligible for the native prompt and analyse both prompt progression and the final choice.

Add guardrails

Opt-in lift is not enough. Watch completion of the surrounding task, early retention, notification settings changes and signs of repeated interruption. Segment cautiously; small cells can create convincing but unstable stories.

Optimise for informed relevance, not the fastest possible interruption.
